A torsion damper is also commonly referred to as a crankshaft damper, crank pulley damper, and vibration damper. The device is directly connected to the engine’s crankshaft to reduce its torsional vibrations while serving as a sort of pulley for the drive belts. Almost every vehicle that runs on gasoline uses this type of damper. That said some newer vehicles have much better dampers which are designed to be compact and absorb much more of the vibrations than those of older vehicles.
Torsional vibrations and noise can become problematic if the torsion damper is worn out. This is due to the forces operating in the powertrain that is not reduced, resulting in increased noise and vibrations and reduced driving comfort. The noise can be instantly fixed by replacing the damper, but it’s something that can only be done by a certified mechanic. That said if you experience any sort of unusual vibration or noise its best to get the vehicle inspected by a mechanic.
